The Year of Living Biblically

August 18, 2008

The Rabbit Room just posted my blog about one of my favorite books that I’ve read in a while.  It’s the funny, poignant, and insightful The Year Of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow The Bible As Literally As Possible by A.J. Jacobs.  Jacobs decides to immerse himself in the bible and live according to even the smallest detail of scripture in an attempt to see what religious faith looks like from the inside out.  Oh, did I mention that Jacobs is the editor of Esquire Magazine and self-professed agnostic?

The book not only offers a thoughtful outsiders perspective on faith (without a religion bashing agenda) but is affirming, moving, and of course very funny.  Imagine Jacobs as he swears off any hint of lying, lets hs beard grow without trimming it (as proscribed in the Old Testament), and stones adulterers.  Yep, you read that right.  You can imagine how amusing it is to follow Jacobs on his quest and avoid getting locked away.

More than just your average humor book, The Year of Living BIbilcally made me think, laugh, cry and ultimately left me feeling refreshed.
